Le Grand Concours 2021
Great Results Despite Great Obstacles
The National French Contest organizers understand that teaching during the pandemic has been anything but normal. The testing coordinators
have prized flexibility and options to enable students to participate. To that end, the National French Contest had an online option this year for FLES. Like last year, the test was 100%
online for levels 01-5. With remote proctoring, even students learning from home or in a hybrid model were able to participate. Participation in our chapter was understandably lower than
in the past, given the variety of schedules and the mix of in-person and remote instruction this school year. Despite these difficult circumstances, Central New York French students performed
admirably. Bravo et félicitations!
In our chapter, two students earned gold medals, 13 earned silver medals, 11 earned bronze medals and many earned honorable mention
certificates. A special congratulations to the platinum medal winner, with a perfect score on the level 4E exam!
As in the past, the AATF of CNY is committed to recognizing students’ achievements in the National French Contest. Local prizes are awarded to
the top scorer(s) in each level of the exam, and the AATF of CNY provides printed certificates for national winners and a participation certificate for any test-taker who did not rank
nationally. Online testing allowed for a normal prize distribution schedule, and all teachers received their students’ prizes in early May.
The dates for the 2022 Grand Concours have been set. They are:
FLES: February 14-March 5
Levels 01-5: February 16-March 30
Information about ordering for le Grand Concours 2022 will be available in late fall or early
winter.
If you sat this year out, we hope that you and your students will join us again in participating next year. Remember, medals and rankings are
determined based on comparisons with other test-takers. We have all been through some very unusual school years, and the National French Contest results take that into
account.
Grand Concours registration is now open!
Like all of us, the National French Contest organizers hope that 2021 will be a better year than 2020. While we all hope that teaching and learning can be more “normal” in the spring, the Grand Concours is prepared for the unexpected. This year, the contest will once again be 100% online, with a virtual proctoring option that can be done in a fully remote model. There is no paper/pencil option this year.
The price remains unchanged, at $4.00 per test for AATF members. Fifty cents of that price is returned to our AATF of CNY chapter and is used to purchase chapter prizes for the highest scorers at each level and to ship prizes to each teacher. In addition, the AATF of CNY provides certificates to each participant. There is no need to order paper certificates, as there is an extra cost associated with that at the national level. AATF of CNY will provide your certificates.
Ordering will be online at frenchcontest.org. Expect ordering information early in the new year. The 2021 dates of the National French Contest are as follows:
FLES Contest: February 14-March 1, 2021
(Please make note of February break when scheduling testing.)
Levels 01-5 Contest: February 17-March 31, 2021
(The AATF of CNY recommends testing during the first two weeks of March.)
The National French Contest is a test of students’ listening, reading and grammar skills in French. The 2020 Contest is available for practice without ordering exams.
Once an order is placed, students have access to all the previous online tests to practice. Feedback is instantaneous, as the previous tests are
auto-graded.
Testing typically takes one hour and can be split into two sections on different days. In 2021, Levels 4 and 5 will have 75 minutes total to complete the test.
Additional time has been allotted to account for the more advanced listening selections.
Make sure that you have already renewed your AATF membership to take advantage of member pricing when ordering. Please contact grandconcoursaatfcny@gmail.com with any questions, and be on the look-out for more information in the weeks and months to come.

LE GRAND CONCOURS
Le Grand Concours 2020 - like no other!
For the first time this year, the National French Contest was 100% online for levels 01-5. This change proved to be very lucky, as students
were able to participate despite school closures through a remote proctoring process. While most teachers in Central New York tested before schools closed due to the pandemic, some were able to
complete testing in March or April during the extended prize eligibility period. Despite these difficult circumstances, Central New York French students performed admirably. Bravo et
félicitations!
In our chapter, over 600 students participated, from FLES all the way to Level 5. 21 students earned gold medals, 37 earned silver medals, 57
earned bronze medals and 105 earned honorable mention certificates. A special congratulations to the platinum medal winner, with a perfect score on the level 2
exam!
As in the past, the AATF of CNY is committed to recognizing students’ achievements in the National French Contest. Local prizes are awarded to
the top scorer(s) in each level of the exam, and the AATF of CNY provides printed certificates for national winners and blank participation certificates for any test-taker who did not rank
nationally. Because of the extension of the testing window this year, prizes were somewhat delayed. The AATF of CNY shipped or delivered prizes to teachers’ home or school addresses in
early June.
With the hope that the 2020-2021 school year will approach something like normal teaching conditions, the dates for the 2021 Grand Concours have
been set. They are:
FLES: February 14-March 1
Levels 01-5: February 17-March 31
Information about ordering for le Grand Concours 2021 will be available in late fall or early winter.
