<< SUMMARY OF FALL 2015 WORKSHOP:
Jennifer Rich-Walters’ presentation on October 17, 2015 at our Fall Workshop was titled "Vive le Vocabulaire: Fresh Strategies for Acquisition and Retention.” Attendees were exposed to a variety of ideas to facilitate student learning.
Most noteworthy was the insistence on realizing that the way that information enters the brain is critical to retention/storage and ultimately affects retrieval and memory. The learning environment affects the learner’s brain and teachers must be aware of how different students are comfortable and can more easily learn. For example, for the person with an average IQ, it takes 8 – 15 seconds to process what someone has said, difficult if the person speaking is a fast talker.
Ms. Rich-Walters explained that differentiated instruction is a strong strategy to improve student learning. She encouraged participants to allow students to use any of a variety of materials and resources in the classroom – whiteboards, markers, colored pencils, pens, pencils, scrap paper, lined paper, index cards of different sizes, sketch pads, cell phones, computers Chromebooks, pneumonic tools, audio clips of pronunciation (vacaroo), working along or with a partner – whatever it takes to facilitate learning. And she encouraged allowing students the freedom to decide what was best for them.
Her approach can best be described by “passing the baton” as in allowing choice and letting learning begin. However, the teacher must always be comfortable in the learning atmosphere created, so “controlled choice” options may prove to be the way to make small changes in the classroom.
Further information on this topic can be obtained from Ms. Rich-Walters at
